Are you really seeing people still having to do that? I haven't had to
do that on a Linux installation for about three years. A large part of
that is Linux distributions becoming a good deal less precious about
what software they contain. Ubuntu is now quite happy to offer you
proprietary drivers in areas where there is no open source alternatives.
About six years ago, there was a massive change as many of my alpha-geek
friends became tired of struggling with Linux and switched to OSX. At
the conferences I've been to over the last eighteen months that switch
is starting to reverse. I'm seeing more and more people ditching their
Mac for various reasons and switching to Ubuntu or some other Linux.
