To my understanding, yes, they are still having to do that. The last
review I saw (of OpenSuse v11) at The Register (
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/18/open_suse_11_review/ ) mentioned
that people still needed to get drivers for nVidia in particular. And I
know that wireless drivers are still a minefield, although one
particular company/developer (can't remember the name off hand) have
generated a lot of workable drivers recently.
